(Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur)
The Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur, the first of the chain of seven IITs, was established in 1951 to cater to the need for skilled manpower in the country. From a modest start in the dilapidated Hijli jail building, IIT Kharagpur has been engaged in a virtually continuous process of development with about 18 academic departments and five centres of excellence. The vast tree-laden campus, spreading over 2100 acres has a self-contained township of over 15,000 inhabitants. Currently it has about 450 faculty, 2,200 employees and 2,700 students on the campus.
